This collection is comprised of three ledger sized letter books containing the business correspondence of the firm of Randall H. Greene & Sons for the period November 9, 1968 through March 10, 1870. The writing is legible with minimal blurring and fading, but the covers are detached on all three volumes and the pages are loose. Highlights include involvement of Greene & Sons in a dispute involving the purchase of gold. |

Scattered mentions of Randall H. Greene (or Green) & Sons confirms that they were in business as early as 1842, listed as "brokers in drysalteries, dyestuffs, drugs, oil, starch, foreign wools, etc." and were doing business from an address at 63 ư Wall Street in New York City, while residing in Brooklyn. An 1850 Mercantile Directory shows that the firm has moved to 94 Wall Street and gives the home address as 176 Henry Avenue, Brooklyn. They are now listed simply as drug brokers. The correspondence for the firm seems to have been under the supervision of Charles A. Greene, while John L. Greene appears to have been an attorney who handled the legal side of things. |

Vol. 1 - November 9, 1868 to February 17, 1869 contains 1348 letters on 760 pages with a 28-page Index. Highlights include a drystuffs recipe and a six-page letter dated December 5, 1868 to suppliers in France concerning textile manufacture in the U.S. "Our Country never shew more prosperous Evidences for a good and paying business for the coming season." Vol. 2 - February 18, 1869 to June 25, 1869 contains 1430 letters on 775 pages with a 36-page Index. Highlights include a formula for dyestuffs. Vol. 3 - November 5, 1869-March 10, 1870 contains 1284 letters on 784 pages with a 29-page Index. |
