Summary A study was made to determine the factors that might affect the intercoat adhesion between specification finishes and epoxy resin primer MIL-P-52192. It was determined that the migration of unreacted amine to the surface of air dried epoxy primer films could adversely affect intercoat adhesion when subjected to accelerated laboratory tests. However, there was no evidence of this on systems subjected to 2 1/2 years exterior exposure. To minimize the possibility of intercoat adhesion problems the following recommendations are made: (a) Apply the finish coat within 4 hours after application of primer; (b) if the finish coat cannot be applied within 4 hours, the primer should be given a light sanding immediately prior to painting; (c) if possible bake the primer for one hour at 300F.
